About Pets ALIVE
Pets ALIVE is a Bloomington-based non-profit organization dedicated to ending pet over-population in South-Central Indiana with high quality, low-cost spay / neuter services for cats and dogs. Our efforts are supported by corporate and nonprofit grants, private donations, and clinic fees.
Our efforts began in early 2002, when one of our founding members-to-be wrote a letter to the Bloomington Herald-Times expressing outrage over the killing of homeless animals. Two others responded to her call to action, and formed the Pets ALIVE founders group.
Gathering momentum, a growing band of volunteers tirelessly researched the crisis of pet overpopulation, interviewed national experts, visited other areas who had successful programs in place, and spent countless hours discussing pet homelessness with area officials. As a result of their work, in December of 2002, Pets ALIVE Adopt-A-Pet was born.
Within 14 months it was responsible for over 350 adoptions. Not only did this program have a significant impact on the euthanasia rate, it brought to the forefront of the community the plight of over 75% of the homeless animals in our community. Adopt-A-Pet had a successful run of 14 months. However, in that 14-month period, the time, costs, and labor proved to be too much. It also became clear that the root of the overpopulation problem could only be addressed by spaying and neutering.
Beginning in January 2004, Pets ALIVE made the decision to focus its energies on finding a permanent home for its spay/neuter clinic. After a year of researching and planning, Pets ALIVE Spay/Neuter Clinic opened, with its operations modeled on the highly-successful and nationally acclaimed Spay/Neuter Clinic in Asheville, NC. The rest is history—in the making. Since opening in March 2005, the Pets ALIVE Spay/Neuter Clinic staff has performed over 20,000 sterilization surgeries, thereby preventing the birth of thousands of unwanted litters of kittens and puppies.
We are transporting cats and dogs from all over South Central Indiana to the Bloomington Pets ALIVE Spay / Neuter clinic. We make our Transport Outreach Program work by partnering with other animal welfare organizations, who schedule pickup and dropoff on particular days of the week or month.
Thanks to our hard-working staff, with each day we are open, we are doing more to improve the plight of homeless animals.
